The Elegant Universe

A Theory of Everything?
Some physicists believe string theory
may unify the forces of nature
:::by Brian Greene:::

The fundamental particles of the universe that physicists have identified—electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and so on—are the "letters" of all matter. Just like their linguistic counterparts, they appear to have no further internal substructure. String theory proclaims otherwise. According to string theory, if we could examine these particles with even greater precision—a precision many orders of magnitude beyond our present technological capacity—we would find that each is not pointlike but instead consists of a tiny, one-dimensional loop. Like an infinitely thin rubber band, each particle contains a vibrating, oscillating, dancing filament that physicists have named a string.

In the figure, we illustrate this essential idea of string theory by starting with an ordinary piece of matter, an apple, and repeatedly magnifying its structure to reveal its ingredients on ever smaller scales. String theory adds the new microscopic layer of a vibrating loop to the previously known progression from atoms through protons, neutrons, electrons, and quarks.

Although it is by no means obvious, this simple replacement of point-particle material constituents with strings resolves the incompatibility between quantum mechanics and general relativity (which, as currently formulated, cannot both be right). String theory thereby unravels the central Gordian knot of contemporary theoretical physics. This is a tremendous achievement, but it is only part of the reason string theory has generated such excitement.

  • The last post, MY OWN, was removed by me myself for some amendments!

Dear ... I'm sorry, I can't read nor speak Arabic!
I found your blog via, I guess hajeji's and find it very nice ... but I have a few problems!

Ok ... as I said, I like your blog a lot but as you can guess, have a problem with Arabic but that is only my personal minus. What is at least AS difficult is your choice of subject! I confess I am MORE than fond of astronomy (took a semester in college) and consequently as well physics (less though) but instead of being mentally returned to the auditorium of the college with it's lectures, I'd like much more to read about you yourself, your attitude to current events, what you're doing in Aachen ect! The subject you chose - I personally feel - is too specific for MANY people and will thus give you less responses and readers as you wish to have .. so, what do you think? Will you give me your input? I'd highly appreciate that!

  • hi,
thank u for ur visit & ur reply..
i cant blame you that you cant "yet" speak or read arabic..

to get to the point. the title of my blog is:"clean thniking"
the sub-title contains words like "experimental-physics, electronics, mechanics .." etc.
whitch "should" indicate that this blog is a scientific blog..
secound, one of the blocks to the right says that this bolg is for people interessted in science...

third, mein blog ist etwa eine intitiative gegen "leere" arabische blogs und seiten im netz, die nichts anderes anbieten als nur chatten und ..... ,, du weisst es schon.

fourth, i have some problems "mich richtig auszudrueken" . i cant express my self the right way in words... i would rather make a film about my life than writing about it... :)
sciences are "eindeutig und klar", simple ideas "or problems" are to be formed in words and equations, then written to the public.

i guess thats all what i had to say..

PS:1-you schould have found my blog via thamood
2-its not me in the photo.. im much much younger :P

You sound like einstein, is that why you are studying in germany? lol.

I am more into microbiology than physics. Kheir Inshah'Allah.

Take care brother - and work hard ;P

  • salam brother & thnx for ur visit.
no akhi im "still" not einstein :D
im doing Computer Engineering in germany, but u can say that physics is my hobby..."what a strange hobby"

in sha alla there would be posts about microbiology, bionic & biotechnik.
